Read Aloud Stories for Toddlers

The best read aloud stories for toddlers are short, repetitive and built around things they already know: bath time, a favorite toy, saying goodnight. Between one and three, children love hearing a pattern come round again and joining in with a sound or a word they can predict. A toddler story that runs long usually loses them, so the ones that work are short enough to finish while they are still listening.

Below is a complete toddler story to read aloud tonight, free. When you make a personalized one, choose the 0 to 3 age band and the lines stay short and rhythmic, with your toddler’s name in them. It takes about thirty seconds.

Goodnight, Little Boats

A free story to read aloud tonight

Pip had three little boats in the bath. A red one. A blue one. A yellow one.

“Time for bed, red boat,” said Pip. Bloop, said the red boat, and it floated to the side.

“Time for bed, blue boat,” said Pip. Bloop, said the blue boat, and it floated to the side.

“Time for bed, yellow boat.” But the yellow boat bobbed and bobbed. It wanted one more splash.

So Pip gave it one more splash. Just one. Splish. Then the yellow boat floated to the side too, next to its friends.

Three little boats, all in a row. One little Pip, all wrapped up in a towel. Goodnight, boats. Goodnight, Pip.

How long should a toddler bedtime story be?

Short enough to finish while they are still with you, which is often only a few minutes. A Z Tales short story is eight pages and around three hundred words, which reads aloud in roughly three to five minutes at bedtime pace.

Why does my toddler want the same story every night?

Knowing what comes next is part of the fun at this age: it lets them join in, say the “bloop” before you do, and feel the ending coming. It is fine to read the same one again. A story you make on Z Tales can be saved to your library and read again on another night.
