A Simple Bedtime Routine for a 3 Year Old (and a Story to End It)
Three year olds are expert stallers. One more drink, one more hug, a sudden urgent question about sharks. A predictable routine will not stop all of it, but it gives the evening a shape your child can learn, and a shape is much easier to follow than a list of instructions.
Below is a simple routine many families use as a starting point, with a short free story at the end to read on the first night. Adjust the steps to your family. The order matters more than the details.
This is general information, not medical advice. If sleep is a problem most nights for weeks, talk to your pediatrician.
A simple routine, step by step
1. A warning before it starts. “Five more minutes of play, then it’s bath time.” Three year olds handle a change better when they know it is coming.
2. Bath or a wash. Warm water is a clear signal that the busy part of the day is over.
3. Pajamas and teeth. Letting them choose between two pairs of pajamas gives them a choice that does not change the plan.
4. One drink and the bathroom. Doing these on purpose, before the story, takes away two of the most popular reasons to get up later.
5. One story, in bed. Agree on how many before you start. A story that winds down at the end, slower and quieter, helps their body follow.
6. Lights down and the same goodnight words. The same short phrase every night, like “Goodnight, see you in the morning,” becomes part of the routine itself.
When they stall
Many parents find it helps to build the common stalls into the routine (the drink, the extra hug) so there is nothing left to ask for, and then to answer anything new with a calm “We can talk about sharks in the morning.” A picture chart of the steps on their door can let a three year old check off the routine themselves, which many enjoy.
A free story to end the routine: Ben Does Bedtime
First, Ben had his bath. He was a submarine. Bubbles everywhere.
Then Ben put on his pajamas. The ones with the rockets. He chose them himself.
Then Ben brushed his teeth. Top teeth, bottom teeth, spit. Done.
Then Ben had one sip of water, and went to the bathroom, and washed his hands, and was very proud of all of it.
Then Ben got into bed, and Mama read one story, and it was about a sleepy whale.
Then Mama turned the light down low and said what she always said: “Goodnight, Ben. See you in the morning.” And Ben said what he always said: “See you in the morning.” And then Ben did not say anything else, because he was asleep.
