Read Aloud Stories for Preschoolers

Good read aloud stories for preschoolers, ages three to five, have one simple problem, a small hero who solves it, and an ending that comes back home. Preschoolers can follow a little more plot than toddlers, and they love being the one who helps, so stories where a child fixes something small tend to hold them. Keep it to one problem, though. Two problems at bedtime is how you get “but what about the other thing?”

Here is a complete preschool story to read aloud tonight, free. To make one starring your child, choose the 4 to 5 age band (or 0 to 3 for a young three), pick a world and a lesson, and it is ready in about thirty seconds.

Rosa and the Moon’s Missing Button

A free story to read aloud tonight

Rosa was putting on her pajamas when she found a button on her windowsill. It was round and silver, and it glowed, just a little.

Up in the sky, the moon was frowning. Its coat was flapping open, and the wind kept sneaking in.

“I think this is yours,” Rosa called, holding up the button. The moon leaned down so low that the treetops tickled its chin.

Rosa stood on her tiptoes and pressed the button back on. Click. The way you press a sticker onto a page.

The moon buttoned its coat right up to the top and gave a long, warm sigh. Down below, every window on the street looked a little cozier.

“Thank you,” whispered the moon. Rosa climbed into bed, and the moon stayed right outside her window all night, buttoned up and glowing, keeping watch.

What makes a good read aloud story for preschoolers?

One clear problem, a hero they can picture themselves as, a few words they can join in on, and a calm ending. Pictures help too: every Z Tales story has at least one illustration, and paid plans illustrate every page.

Should I ask questions while I read?

Light ones work well at this age, like “What do you think the moon will do?” or “How would you fix it?” Keep them gentle at bedtime so the story can still wind down.
