Bedtime Stories for 3 Year Olds

Three is often when bedtime worries first show up. A 3 year old’s imagination has suddenly grown big enough to picture something in the dark, and their questions have grown too: why is it night, where does the sun go, what is that noise. A story for a 3 year old can hold one small problem now, as long as it is solved simply and the ending lands somewhere warm.

The story below is about a noise at night that turns out to be something ordinary. It reads aloud in about two minutes. To make one with your 3 year old as the hero, choose the 0 to 3 age band for a younger three, or 4 to 5 if they already enjoy longer stories. Ava and the Tap Tap Tap

A free story to read aloud tonight

Ava was in bed with Bunny, and the lamp was off, when she heard it. Tap. Tap. Tap.

“Bunny,” whispered Ava, “what is that?” Bunny did not know. Bunny was a bunny.

Ava listened very hard. Tap. Tap. It was coming from the window. So she held Bunny tight and tiptoed over, one step, two steps, and peeked behind the curtain.

It was a little branch from the tree outside, waving in the wind and tapping on the glass, tap, tap, tap, like it was saying hello.

“Oh,” said Ava. “It’s only you.” She waved back at the branch. The branch waved at her. Tap.

Ava climbed back into bed with Bunny. Now the tapping sounded friendly, like someone outside keeping her company. Tap. Tap. Tap. And Ava fell asleep before it stopped.

Why has my 3 year old started getting scared at bedtime?

Many children start noticing fears around three, as their imagination grows faster than their understanding of what is real. Stories where the scary thing turns out to be ordinary (a branch, a coat, the cat) can help. If fears are intense or getting in the way of sleep most nights, mention it to your pediatrician.

My 3 year old keeps asking for one more story. What helps?

Many families agree on a number before the first story starts, so the last one is not a surprise. A story that clearly winds down at the end helps too: every ZTales story is written so the last pages come home and get quieter.

Which age should I choose for a 3 year old?

Choose 0 to 3 if your child likes short, simple stories, or 4 to 5 if they already sit happily through longer ones. You know your three year old better than any age chart does.
