Bedtime Stories for 4 Year Olds
Four year olds live half in pretend. The couch is a boat, the bath is the ocean, and they are, quite seriously, a dinosaur. They also love a joke they are in on, and they are starting to enjoy a story with a real middle: something goes wrong, and the hero sorts it out. A good bedtime story for a 4 year old can be a little silly, a little brave, and still end slowly enough to sleep after.
The story below is a pretend play adventure that turns back into an ordinary bedtime. It reads aloud in about two to three minutes. To make one where your 4 year old is the hero, choose the 4 to 5 age band and pick whatever they are pretending to be this week.

Captain Leo and the Bathtub Sea
A free story to read aloud tonight
Leo was not taking a bath. Leo was Captain Leo, and this was the Bathtub Sea, and his rubber duck was the bravest first mate who ever floated.
“Storm ahead!” shouted Captain Leo, and made the water wave with both hands. Splash. The duck tipped over. “Duck overboard!”
Captain Leo dived in to save him, which meant putting his whole face in the water and blowing bubbles. Blub, blub, blub. Got him!
Then came the Great Shampoo Cloud, which was very fluffy and smelled like apples, and the Captain was brave the whole time, even when it got near his eyes.
“Captain,” said Mom, holding out a towel, “your ship needs to come into harbor.” So Captain Leo sailed into the towel and was wrapped up tight, like a boat tied to a dock.
In bed, the duck sat on the shelf, still dripping a little. “Good work today, first mate,” whispered Captain Leo. And the Captain, who had had a very busy voyage, closed his eyes and fell asleep.
What kind of stories do 4 year olds like?
Many 4 year olds love pretend play, gentle silliness, animals and a hero their own size who solves a small problem. They often like to be asked what happens next. A personalized story where they are the hero and their own toy comes along tends to go down well.
Is a silly story okay right before sleep?
A little silliness early in the story is fine. What matters is the end. A story that winds down over its last pages, slower and quieter, lets the giggles settle. Every ZTales story is written to end calm, however silly the start.
Which age should I choose for a 4 year old?
Choose 4 to 5. If your child is a young four who prefers very short stories, 0 to 3 works too. For more stories at this stage, see [read aloud stories for preschoolers](/stories/read-aloud-stories-for-preschoolers).
