Readmio Alternatives
We make one of the options on this page, so read it with that in mind, and hold us to it. We have tried to write the comparison we wanted when we were shopping: real prices, no invented flaws, and a clear answer about which job each product is actually for. Everything below was checked in October 2026.
The short answer
Readmio is built for a parent who likes reading aloud. You read the story, and sound effects and music play along as your voice reaches each part. It keeps a permanent free story set, and paid plans unlock the full library.
What it does not advertise is putting your child into the story by name. So the honest question is what you want instead: a story starring your child (ZTales, free to try), a large free library with no account (Storyberries), or a big catalog of published books for a child who reads alone (Epic!).

Prices are the lowest publicly listed on each company's own site or app store listing in October 2026, before tax and any format upgrades. Where a company publishes different prices in different places, or does not publish one at all, the table says so rather than guessing. Some services also price by credit or token pack, so your real cost depends on how often you make a story. Check current pricing before buying. This page will be behind eventually.
When Readmio is still the right choice
If the part of bedtime your child loves is your voice, Readmio keeps you at the center of it, and the sound effects add a bit of theater without handing the story to a screen narrator. If you want to read aloud yourself, from a library of ready-made stories, it is a good fit, and its lifetime option suits families who dislike subscriptions.
When you need something else
A ready-made library cannot know that your child is starting at a new school on Monday, or that the dog is getting old. A personalized story can put your child, by name, into the thing they are actually facing that week, and end it calm. If you would rather listen than read, a sleep audio app like Moshi is built for that instead.
The part that isn’t on the comparison table
Every ZTales story is written under rules the storyteller cannot break. It goes near the thing your child is actually facing rather than around it (the first day, the new baby, the dog who died) at their size, and it does not fix it, because nothing you read at bedtime does. Nobody is told to be brave, and no character announces what they learned.
And every story has to land. Wherever it travels, the last two pages come home and come down: the child safe, somewhere familiar, going to sleep. That constraint costs something (a few stories would be more exciting if they were allowed to end big), but a story that ends big is one you will be sitting through twice.
That is the whole difference, and it applies on the free plan exactly as much as the paid ones.
Where we fit
ZTales writes a new illustrated bedtime story starring your child. It starts in about five seconds and is finished in about thirty, and every one ends calm. You can make one free with no account, and three a day with a free account. We also keep a free library of complete stories to read aloud yourself, including social stories for things like the dentist, a new sibling or a first sleepover.
What we are not: a sound effects reader. If reading aloud to music and effects is the point, Readmio does that and we do not.
Is there an app like Readmio that uses my child’s name?
Yes. ZTales, Oscar Stories and StarredIn all put a child into the story. ZTales writes an illustrated story starring your child by name that always ends calm, free to try with no account. Readmio itself personalizes the telling, with effects that follow your voice, rather than the text.
