Free Bedtime Story Apps
We make one of the options on this page, so read it with that in mind, and hold us to it. We have tried to write the comparison we wanted when we were shopping: real prices, no invented flaws, and a clear answer about which job each product is actually for. Everything below was checked in October 2026.
The short answer
“Free” means three different things in this category: free forever, free to start with a limit, and a free trial that turns into a subscription. This page sorts them.
Free forever, not personalized: Storyberries (a library of more than 1,700 stories) and Readmio’s permanent free set. Free to start, personalized: ZTales (one story with no account, three a day with a free account), Oscar Stories (first stories free) and StarredIn (one personalized illustrated story). Free trial, then a free set: Tale Twirlers (seven days of everything, then a rotating set of free stories). Free trial only: Moshi (seven days).

Prices are the lowest publicly listed on each company's own site or app store listing in October 2026, before tax and any format upgrades. Where a company publishes different prices in different places, or does not publish one at all, the table says so rather than guessing. Some services also price by credit or token pack, so your real cost depends on how often you make a story. Check current pricing before buying. This page will be behind eventually.
How to tell if “free” really is free
Three questions settle it. Do you need to enter a card? Is there a limit per day or in total? And does the free version include the thing you actually want, like narration or your child’s name? Many apps are free to download and paid to use. The table above shows what each one says its free tier includes, and where a company does not publish its allowance, it says so rather than guessing.
Free forever versus free to start
A free library like Storyberries will cost you nothing for as long as you use it, but every child reads the same stories. A personalized app writes a new story for your child each time, which costs the company money to make, so free tiers there are usually a limited number of stories. Both are worth having. Which one fits depends on whether your child wants a good story or a story about them.
The part that isn’t on the comparison table
Every ZTales story is written under rules the storyteller cannot break. It goes near the thing your child is actually facing rather than around it (the first day, the new baby, the dog who died) at their size, and it does not fix it, because nothing you read at bedtime does. Nobody is told to be brave, and no character announces what they learned.
And every story has to land. Wherever it travels, the last two pages come home and come down: the child safe, somewhere familiar, going to sleep. That constraint costs something (a few stories would be more exciting if they were allowed to end big), but a story that ends big is one you will be sitting through twice.
That is the whole difference, and it applies on the free plan exactly as much as the paid ones.
Where we fit
ZTales’ free tier is genuinely usable: one personalized, illustrated story with no account and no card, and three a day once you make a free account, each with a lullaby underneath. Narration and illustrations on every page are part of Plus, at $9.99 a month or $99 a year, with a 7 day free trial.
There is also a free library of complete stories on our site that costs nothing and needs no account at all.
What is the best free bedtime story app?
For a free library with nothing to pay ever, Storyberries. For a free story starring your child by name, ZTales makes one with no account, and three a day with a free account. For reading aloud yourself with sound effects, Readmio keeps a permanent free set.
Are there free bedtime story apps with no ads?
Ads and in-app purchases change from app to app and over time, so open each one yourself and check before handing it to your child. Look at the settings and the store listing, which has to declare in-app purchases.
Is there a free personalized bedtime story app?
Yes. ZTales makes a personalized, illustrated story free with no signup. Oscar Stories makes your first stories free, and StarredIn makes one personalized illustrated story free.
