Storyberries Alternatives

We make one of the options on this page, so read it with that in mind, and hold us to it. We have tried to write the comparison we wanted when we were shopping: real prices, no invented flaws, and a clear answer about which job each product is actually for. Everything below was checked in October 2026.

The short answer

Storyberries is free, and it is genuinely good. More than 1,700 stories, no account, no cost. If you want something lovely to read tonight for nothing at all, it is hard to beat, and we would not tell you otherwise.

What it is not is personal. Every child reads the same stories. So the honest question is what you want that it does not do: a story starring your child by name (ZTales, free to try), a much bigger catalog of published books for a child who reads alone (Epic!), or sound effects while you read aloud yourself (Readmio).

Prices are the lowest publicly listed on each company's own site or app store listing in October 2026, before tax and any format upgrades. Where a company publishes different prices in different places, or does not publish one at all, the table says so rather than guessing. Some services also price by credit or token pack, so your real cost depends on how often you make a story. Check current pricing before buying. This page will be behind eventually.

When Storyberries is still the right choice

If cost is the deciding factor, nothing on this page beats free with no account, and Storyberries has a library large enough that you will not run out. It is also a good fit for reading together without a screen staying lit in the bedroom for long: pick a story, read it, close it. If that is what bedtime needs, keep using it.

When you need something else

The gap is personalization. A child who has just started at a new school, or who is getting a baby sister next week, will not find their week in a library of pre-written stories. That is the job a personalized story does: it puts your child, by name, into the situation they are actually facing. If your child is an independent reader who wants range and volume instead, a subscription library like Epic! is the closer match.

The part that isn’t on the comparison table

Every ZTales story is written under rules the storyteller cannot break. It goes near the thing your child is actually facing rather than around it (the first day, the new baby, the dog who died) at their size, and it does not fix it, because nothing you read at bedtime does. Nobody is told to be brave, and no character announces what they learned.

And every story has to land. Wherever it travels, the last two pages come home and come down: the child safe, somewhere familiar, going to sleep. That constraint costs something (a few stories would be more exciting if they were allowed to end big), but a story that ends big is one you will be sitting through twice.

That is the whole difference, and it applies on the free plan exactly as much as the paid ones.

Where we fit

ZTales writes a new illustrated bedtime story starring your child in about thirty seconds, and every one ends calm. You can make one free with no account, and three a day with a free account. We also keep a free library of complete stories to read without making anything, including social stories for things like the dentist or a new sibling.

What we are not: a library the size of Storyberries. If you want thousands of different free stories, it has far more than we do.

Now make one starring your child

A brand new bedtime story, written tonight with your child as the hero. It starts in about 5 seconds. Free to try, no account needed.

Is there anything like Storyberries that is personalized?

Yes. ZTales, Oscar Stories and BedtimeStory.ai all write stories on demand. ZTales puts your child’s name in an illustrated story that ends calm, free to try with no account. Storyberries itself is not personalized: it is a library of pre-written stories.

What is the best free alternative to Storyberries?

For a free library of pre-written stories, Readmio keeps a permanent free story set. For a free story with your child in it, ZTales makes one free with no signup, and three a day with a free account.

Is Storyberries really free?

Storyberries describes its library as entirely free to read online, with no account needed. Check its site for the current details, but free is the whole point of it, and it is why we say plainly when it is the better choice.
