Puppy Bedtime Stories

Puppies are perfect bedtime characters because they have the same problem many children do: they are not tired, and then they are very tired, all at once. A puppy bedtime story lets a child be the grown-up for once, helping the puppy settle, which is a surprisingly good way to settle themselves.

Here is a complete puppy story to read aloud tonight, free. If your family has a real dog, you can make one with your child and your dog together in about thirty seconds.

Ruby and the Puppy Who Wasn’t Sleepy

A free story to read aloud tonight

Biscuit was a brand new puppy, brown with one white ear, and he did not want to go to sleep. Not one bit.

When Ruby put him in his basket, he jumped out. When she put him back, he found a sock. When she took the sock, he found the other sock.

“Biscuit,” said Ruby, “it’s bedtime.” Biscuit wagged so hard his whole back end wiggled. Bedtime, he seemed to think, sounded like a new game.

So Ruby did what Mom did for her. She dimmed the lamp. She put a soft blanket in his basket that smelled like her. She sat next to him on the floor and talked very quietly, about nothing much, about the yard and the moon.

Biscuit’s wiggling slowed down. He yawned a big pink puppy yawn, turned around three times, and flopped. His white ear twitched once, and then not again.

“Goodnight, Biscuit,” whispered Ruby. Then she climbed into her own bed, yawned a big yawn of her own, turned around once, and flopped, just like him.

Can I make a puppy story with our real dog in it?

Yes. Starting from this page, a puppy is already typed in. Change it to your own dog’s name and color, like “our brown dog, Biscuit”, and the story stars your child and your dog together.

Is this a good story for a child getting a new puppy?

It works well alongside one. There is also a separate story on this site about getting a new pet, which is about being the calm one while a new animal settles in.
