One evening, as the first star blinked awake, Sam wandered onto a farm tucked in under a quilt of stars, where the barn breathed slow and warm.
There Sam met a duck who loved puddles more than ponds, named Splash. “One more puddle,” begged Splash. “Just one more before bed!”
For every animal was tucked in but Splash — and one more puddle always turned into three.
Sam didn’t scold. Sam just walked beside Splash to the very last puddle and said, “This one’s the goodnight puddle. We’ll say goodnight to it together.”
And they did — “Goodnight, puddle” — and then to the gate, and the hay, and the moon in the water, until goodnight had been said to everything there was.
Then Splash waddled to the barn yawning, the quilt of stars pulled itself up over the farm, and Sam whispered one last goodnight — to the night itself — and slipped into bed.
