Snow Day Bedtime Stories

A snow day bedtime is its own kind of bedtime. The whole day was outside the usual rules, the child is tired in the good way, and half of them are already asking whether tomorrow will be another one. A snow day bedtime story works best when it walks back through the day slowly (the boots by the door, the cold cheeks, the hot chocolate) and lands in a warm bed with the snow still falling outside.

Here is a complete snow day story to read aloud tonight, free. To make one starring your child, start from this page and a snow day on your own street is already typed in. It takes about thirty seconds.

Omar and the Whole White Day

A free story to read aloud tonight

When Omar woke up, the window was white, the street was white, and the radio said the word Omar had been hoping for all week: closed.

He wore two pairs of socks and his snow pants and the mittens on a string, and he and Dad dragged the sled to the hill behind the library, where it seemed every kid in town had had the same idea.

Down the hill was fast and screamy. Back up the hill was slow and puffy. Omar did it eleven times, and on the twelfth he lay in the snow at the bottom and looked up at the flakes coming down out of a gray sky, falling right into his eyes.

At home the mittens went on the radiator, where they dripped and steamed. There was hot chocolate with three marshmallows, and Omar’s cheeks went from cold to hot and stayed pink all afternoon.

“Will it be a snow day tomorrow?” he asked at bedtime. “Nobody knows yet,” said Dad. “The snow hasn’t decided.”

Omar looked out at the street, soft and blue under the streetlight, and the snow still coming down without a sound. Then he got into bed, tired all the way to his toes, and let the snow decide.

How do I get my child to sleep after an exciting snow day?

Most children are properly tired after a day outside, which helps. What tends to keep them up is the excitement about tomorrow. A calm story that goes back through today, slowly, gives that excitement somewhere to go.

Can I make a snow day story starring my child?

Yes. Starting from this page, the story maker opens with a snow day already typed in. Add your child’s name and age, and it is ready in about thirty seconds.
