Just past the edge of the map, where bedtime begins, Ava drifted down into the deep blue where the water hums, and jellyfish glowed like little lamps.
There Ava met a sea turtle who collected lost pearls, named Opal. “You’re just in time,” said Opal, “because something needs us.”
For Opal’s favorite pearl was missing — the small moon-colored one — and the tide had already tucked in half the sea.
Ava looked slowly, the way the ocean does everything: no rushing, no churning, just one gentle sweep at a time along the silver sand.
And there it was — not lost at all, but borrowed: a baby octopus was using it as a nightlight. So Ava and Opal let the pearl stay till morning, because that is what kindness looks like underwater.
Then the whole sea swayed slower, and the whale song turned to humming, and Ava floated home on the tide — up, up, up, and into bed.
