Father’s Day Stories for Kids

Father’s Day, the third Sunday in June in the US, is a good day for a story about doing something together, because that is usually the gift a dad remembers. A Father’s Day story for kids works best when it is small and specific: the homemade tie, the fishing trip, the pancakes shaped like something that is almost a dinosaur.

Here is a complete Father’s Day story to read aloud, free. Not every family has a dad at home, so a personalized story can celebrate a grandpa, an uncle, a stepdad or whoever your child wants to thank. It takes about thirty seconds to make.

Kai and Dad’s Day

A free story to read aloud tonight

For Father’s Day, Kai made Dad a tie out of paper. It was orange, with blue dots, and it was much too short. Dad wore it to breakfast anyway, tucked into his T-shirt.

“Today,” said Kai, “you get to do your favorite things.” Dad thought about it. “My favorite things,” he said, “are going to the lake, eating a sandwich on the dock, and doing all of that with you.”

So they went to the lake. They sat on the dock with their feet over the water and ate peanut butter sandwiches. Dad showed Kai how to skip a stone. Kai’s stones mostly went plop. One of them skipped twice.

“Two!” shouted Kai. “That’s two more than I got the first time I tried,” said Dad. They tried until the sun started to go down and the water turned gold.

On the way home, Kai fell asleep in the car with the paper tie still in his lap. Dad carried him inside and laid him in bed, and took off his shoes, and put the tie on the nightstand.

Kai woke up just a little and mumbled, “Happy Father’s Day.” “Best one yet,” said Dad, very quietly. And Kai went back to sleep, dreaming about stones skipping all the way across the lake.

What if our family doesn’t have a dad at home?

A personalized story can celebrate anyone your child wants to thank on Father’s Day: a grandpa, an uncle, a stepdad, a coach, or two moms on a regular Sunday.

What is a good Father’s Day gift from a young child?

Time together, and something they made. A story starring your child and their dad, saved to your library or printed as a keepsake book on Plus, can be part of the gift.
